Google Translate app may get AI-powered ‘Follow up’ button to dive deeper: Report

Google’s Translate app could get an AI-powered feature that lets users ask follow up questions about their translation, in order to get more context or tweak the responses they have received, shared Android Authority.

The finding was based on an APK teardown, per the outlet, which showed a demo of the potential feature.

A user translating from English to Hindi was able to hit a button to ask for an AI-powered follow-up. This allowed them to get a breakdown of the translation, apart from also tweaking it by formalising the language or simplifying it.

The feature is not yet official and Google has not formally launched it.

Android Authority noted that the AI-powered follow-up question feature was tried out in version 9.3.78.731229477.7 of the Google Translate app.

Indian languages that do not rely on a romanised script are often omitted or poorly represented in machine translation data sets, raising concerns about accessibility.

However, integration with generative AI tools could help make machine translations more accurate and seamless for non-English speakers.
