Qualcomm on Wednesday (April 3, 2025) announced a new high-performance mobile System-on-Chip (SoC), the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. The successor to 8s Gen 3, which was released last year, is built with the older Kryo CPU instead of the Oryon core found in the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset.
Qualcomm claims to have improved the 8s Gen 4’s CPU and GPU performances by 31% and by 49% respectively. Meanwhile, the AI capabilities have also improved by 44% while energy efficiency is better by 39%.
The chip maker has added on-device ray tracing support and an 18-bit triple image signal processor (ISP) that supports up to 320MP camera sensors 4K at 60 FPS on HDR video recording. The SoC also features Snapdragon Elite Gaming features like Snapdragon Game Super Resolution 2.0, Qualcomm Adaptive Performance Engine and Adreno Image Motion Engine 2.0.
The camera is able to recognize and enhance up to 250 layers within an image at 4K resolution. Real-time skin and sky tones correction captures natural colour in lowly lit environments and Night Vision 2.0 records ultra-low light videos at a smooth 4K at 30 FPS.
The chip has an integrated Snapdragon X75 5G modem with peak download speeds of 4.2 Gbps and supports sub-6GHz spectrum instead of the faster mmWave frequency bands.
The chipset also gets Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity.
The NPU supports on-device GenAI and is able to run LLMs enabling the device to handle AI tasks more efficiently.
The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 will debut soon with OEM manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo, Redmi, IQOO and Meizu.
