Linux Foundation launches LF India to boost open source innovation

The Linux Foundation, a global leader in open source innovation, has announced the launch of LF India, a new initiative designed to promote open source development and adoption across India. The announcement was made during KubeCon + CloudNativeCon India, highlighting the country’s pivotal role in advancing open source technologies.

LF India aims to foster collaboration among developers, enterprises, government organizations, and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs). Its initial focus will include cutting-edge open source projects in areas such as cloud native technologies, telecommunications, Edge/IoT, blockchain, security, and domain-specific artificial intelligence (AI).

India is home to nearly 200,000 developers who actively contribute to Linux Foundation-hosted open source projects. LF India will serve as a “sandbox for innovation,” accelerating the incubation of new open source software (OSS) projects. The initiative plans to engage regional startups and IGOs, while providing training, hosting local events, and supporting community meetups to empower India’s growing pool of talented developers.

“With India on track to have the world’s largest developer community by 2028, the country’s open innovation ecosystem is poised for tremendous growth,” said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation. “LF India marks an important step in our mission to expand global awareness of open source. We’re eager to work with government leaders, enterprises, and developers to foster innovation that will have a lasting global impact.”

India’s robust digital public infrastructure, largely built on open source technologies, and a thriving deep-tech startup ecosystem make it an ideal location for this initiative. LF India is set to build on these strengths, advancing the region’s contributions to transformative global technologies.

“We’re excited to launch LF India as a hub for collaborative open source communities,” said Arpit Joshipura, GM/SVP and Head of LF India. “Our goal is to drive local innovation with a global impact, moving India from a consumer to a contributor in the open source ecosystem.”

As open source continues to grow globally, LF India is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of critical digital infrastructure, empowering developers, and fostering innovation across multiple industries.
